What Students Need to Do
- Students identify major events, leaders, and achievements from Phoenicia, Greece, Rome, and Axum. They match examples to the correct civilization and explain why each mattered.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a mixed set, a student correctly sorts events, figures, and contributions by civilization. They can explain the significance of examples such as the Phoenician alphabet, Athenian democracy, Roman law, and Axumite trade.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat Greece as one unified nation rather than separate city-states. They may confuse Axum with Egypt or mix up Greek democracy and the Roman republic. They may also place Alexander, Caesar, and Ezana in the same period.
How to Assess It
- Give students eight examples to label Phoenician, Greek, Roman, or Axumite. Ask them to choose one example and explain its significance in one sentence.

Have pairs sort twelve event, figure, artifact, and contribution cards beneath four civilization labels, then defend two choices.
Ask students to write which civilization left the strongest legacy, using two named contributions as evidence.
