What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how Alexander’s conquests helped Greek language and ideas spread and mix with local cultures. They connect Alexandria and major thinkers to advances in mathematics, science, art, and learning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place the period after Alexander’s conquests and explain how his empire’s breakup created new cultural centers. They accurately match Euclid, Archimedes, and Eratosthenes with their contributions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the Hellenistic Period with earlier Classical Greece or later Roman rule. They may think Greek culture replaced local cultures rather than blending with Egyptian, Persian, and Asian traditions. Some credit Alexander personally for later discoveries.
