What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify key ancient Greek figures and explain what each person changed or contributed. They connect actions and ideas to effects on government, philosophy, science, history, art, or warfare.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately match figures such as Pericles, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Alexander the Great with their contributions. They explain impact using evidence and clear cause-and-effect language.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse Greek figures with Roman leaders or treat myths about gods and heroes as historical evidence. They may list an accomplishment without explaining how it affected Greek society or later civilizations.
How to Assess It
- Give students one figure and ask: “What did this person do, and how did it affect ancient Greece or later societies?” Require two accurate details.

Ways to Teach It
Place figure cards and contribution cards on a floor timeline, then have students connect each pair with string and explain the impact.
Write a six-sentence response to this prompt: “Which ancient Greek figure had the greatest lasting impact, and what evidence supports your choice?”
Play a clue game where teams identify a Greek figure, name the contribution, and earn a second point by explaining its effect.
Compare Socratic questioning, Aristotle’s scientific study, or Athenian civic leadership with a modern classroom, research lab, or local government meeting.
