What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify major Greek contributions in government, philosophy, literature, theater, architecture, art, mathematics, science, history, and sports. They summarize what each contribution involved and how it influenced later societies.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can describe several achievements accurately using specific examples, such as democracy in Athens or geometry linked to Euclid. They can explain a lasting influence without simply listing names or inventions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think ancient Greece was one unified country rather than a collection of city-states. They may assume Athenian democracy included women, enslaved people, and noncitizens. They may also confuse Greek achievements with Roman ones.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Choose two ancient Greek achievements, summarize each in one sentence, and explain one way each still affects society.

Have groups sort picture and text cards into democracy, philosophy, arts, architecture, science, and sports, then justify two placements.
