What Students Need to Do: Students identify major Mesopotamian achievements, such as cuneiform, written laws, irrigation systems, the wheel, and base-60 mathematics. They summarize how each achievement solved a problem or influenced later societies.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name several achievements and explain each in one or two accurate sentences. The student connects evidence from a source or artifact to an achievement and its impact.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat Mesopotamia as one unchanging empire instead of a region with several civilizations. They may say Hammurabi created the first laws rather than one early written law code. They may list inventions without explaining their uses or effects.
How to Assess It: Use an exit ticket: Choose two Mesopotamian achievements. For each, write what it was and why it mattered.

Lesson moves

Give groups clay and craft sticks to make cuneiform tablets, exchange them, and discuss how writing helped manage city life.
Ask students to write: Which Mesopotamian achievement had the greatest long-term impact, and what evidence supports your choice?
Run a matching relay with cards showing achievements, problems solved, and later impacts, then have teams justify each completed set.
Have students inspect a clock, an irrigation map, and a posted law, then compare each with related Mesopotamian achievements.
