What Students Need to Do: Students connect Rome’s victory over Carthage to gains in land, trade routes, wealth, and military power. They explain how those gains helped Rome expand from an Italian republic into a Mediterranean empire.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can build a clear cause-and-effect chain from Roman victory to wider expansion. The student uses evidence such as control of Sicily, Spain, North Africa, and western Mediterranean trade routes.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Hannibal won because he defeated Roman armies in several famous battles. They may also assume Rome became an empire overnight or overlook the value of ports and trade routes.
How to Assess It: Use this exit ticket: Name two results of Rome’s victory over Carthage, then explain how each result made further Roman expansion easier.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a Mediterranean map to shade Roman gains, mark trade routes, and add arrows showing where Rome could expand next.
Ask students to write: Which mattered most to Roman growth, new land, wealth, trade routes, or military power? Defend one choice.
Have teams sort event and effect cards, then race to build an accurate chain from the First Punic War to Roman expansion.
Show a modern Mediterranean shipping map and ask students why controlling major ports and sea routes can increase a country’s power.
