CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.3

Math6th GradeUnderstand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.

The standard

Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.

What this standard means

Students need to use ratios and rates to solve problems with real numbers and units. They should make and use tables, tape diagrams, double number lines, and equations to find missing values, compare rates, and work with percent when it fits.

Mastery looks like choosing a useful model, labeling units, scaling ratios correctly, and explaining the answer in context. Students often get stuck treating ratios like ordinary subtraction, mixing up part-to-part and part-to-whole, or forgetting that both quantities must scale by the same factor.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on activity: Give pairs colored cubes and recipe cards, then have them build and scale mixtures like 2 red for every 3 blue.
  • Discussion prompt: Ask, “Which is the better buy, 12 ounces for $3 or 20 ounces for $4.40, and how do you know?”
  • Quick assessment: Show a double number line with one missing value and ask students to fill it in and write one sentence explaining the scale factor.
  • Real-world connection: Have students use a grocery ad to compare unit prices for two sizes of the same item.
