Math7th GradeSolve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.

The standard

Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies.

What this standard means

Students need to solve multi-step problems that include fractions, decimals, whole numbers, and negative numbers. They should choose when to convert forms, use operation properties to make calculations easier, and decide whether a calculator, mental math, paper, or a diagram fits the problem.

Mastery looks like a student setting up a sensible plan, carrying out accurate computations, and checking if the answer makes sense. Common trouble spots are mixing fraction and decimal forms too early, losing negative signs, doing operations in the wrong order, and giving exact answers that are not reasonable for the situation.

Ways to teach it

  • Give pairs a receipt, coupon, and tax rate, then have them calculate the final cost using decimals and fractions where helpful.
  • Ask students to write which is easier for a problem, fractions or decimals, and explain their choice in two sentences.
  • Use an exit ticket with one raise problem and one temperature change problem, each requiring an estimate and exact answer.
  • Have students plan the placement of a shelf or picture frame using tape measures, mixed numbers, and a reasonableness check.
