CCSS.Math.Content.HSN-Q.A.1

MathGrades 9–12Reason quantitatively and use units to solve problems.

The standard

Use units as a way to understand problems and to guide the solution of multi-step problems; choose and interpret units consistently in formulas; choose and interpret the scale and the origin in graphs and data displays.

What this standard means

Students need to track units through a problem, not just compute numbers. They should choose units that fit the situation, convert when needed, and use units to decide what operations make sense. They also need to read graphs with attention to scale, origin, and what each axis means.

Mastery looks like answers with correct units, clear conversions, and reasonable graph choices. Students often get stuck by mixing units, dropping units during calculations, or trusting a graph without noticing a broken scale or missing zero.

Ways to teach it

  • Give pairs a grocery receipt, gas mileage chart, and map, then have them calculate total trip cost with every unit shown.
  • Ask students to explain why “50 miles divided by 2 gallons” gives a different meaning than “2 gallons divided by 50 miles.”
  • Show three graphs of the same data with different scales, and ask students which one is most misleading and why.
  • Use a phone plan, electric bill, or recipe scaling problem to show how units guide each step of a calculation.
