What this standard means
Students need to find “per 1” amounts when the numbers in the ratio are fractions. They should divide fractions correctly, keep track of units, and explain what the answer means. They may work with miles per hour, cups per batch, dollars per pound, or square feet per minute.
Mastery looks like choosing the right division, simplifying the complex fraction, and labeling the unit rate in context. Common trouble spots are flipping the wrong fraction, treating the ratio as addition or subtraction, dropping units, and not knowing which quantity should be “per 1.”
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Use measuring cups to compare 3/4 cup juice in 1/2 batch, then find cups of juice per batch.
- Prompt: Explain why 2/3 divided by 1/4 answers “how many two-thirds are in one-fourth” or correct that statement.
- Quick assessment: Give three fraction ratios with units and ask students to compute, label, and write one sentence interpreting each rate.
- Real-world connection: Compare two grocery signs, 1/2 pound for $3 and 3/4 pound for $4.20, to find price per pound.
