What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students convert measurements by multiplying or dividing with a ratio equal to one. They track unit labels, cancel unwanted units, and state the answer in the requested unit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a correct conversion factor and orient it so the unwanted unit cancels. They calculate accurately, label the new unit, and check whether the result is reasonable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply when they should divide, or use a conversion factor upside down. They may drop unit labels, add conversion values, or assume a larger numerical answer means a larger quantity.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A trail is 2.75 miles long. Using 1 mile = 5,280 feet, find its length in feet and show your conversion factor.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs rulers and measuring tapes to measure a table in inches, then convert the result to feet and check by measuring again.
Ask students to explain why multiplying by 12 converts feet to inches, while dividing by 12 converts inches to feet.
Create a card sort matching measurements, conversion factors, equations, and equivalent answers, such as 3 yards, 9 feet, and 108 inches.
Have students convert grocery package weights between pounds and ounces, then compare unit prices for two package sizes.
