What this standard means
Students need to use ratios to change from one unit to another, such as inches to feet, minutes to hours, or ounces to pounds. They should know which conversion factor to use and whether to multiply or divide so the size of the quantity still makes sense.
Mastery looks like setting up conversions clearly, canceling or tracking units, and checking that the answer is reasonable. Students often get stuck choosing the wrong operation, using the conversion backward, or forgetting that units must change along with the number.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Give pairs rulers, measuring tape, and classroom objects, then have them measure in inches and convert each length to feet.
- Discussion prompt: Ask students, “If 36 inches equals 3 feet, why does the number get smaller when the unit gets larger?”
- Quick assessment: Put three conversions on an exit ticket, including one multi-step problem like minutes to days.
- Real-world connection: Have students convert a recipe from cups to tablespoons and explain how the serving size changes the measurements.
