What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use known unit relationships to rewrite a measurement in a larger or smaller unit. They combine conversions with addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to solve multi-step problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately convert measurements in both directions and label each result with the correct unit. They choose useful units, show the conversion steps, and solve multi-step problems with mixed units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply when converting to a larger unit or divide when converting to a smaller unit. They may confuse unit relationships, move a decimal without reasoning, or leave different units in the same calculation.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A 4 m ribbon loses pieces measuring 125 cm and 0.75 m. How many centimeters remain?” Ask students to show conversions and label each value.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs meter sticks, rulers, and classroom objects to measure, then record each length in meters, centimeters, and millimeters.
Ask students to explain in writing which is longer, 2.4 m or 235 cm, and prove their answer with a conversion.
Create matching cards with equivalent measurements, such as 3 kg and 3,000 g, for students to pair against a timer.
Have students plan a 5 km charity walk with distances marked in meters, then calculate the distance remaining after several stops.
