Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two column table.

What Students Need to Do
- Students compare the sizes of related units for length, mass, volume, and time. They convert larger units to smaller units and organize equivalent measures in tables.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify the larger and smaller unit in a pair. They multiply by the correct conversion factor and record equivalent measurements in a two-column table.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may divide when changing a larger unit into a smaller unit. They may use the wrong conversion factor, add the factor repeatedly, or mix metric and customary units.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Complete a feet-to-inches table for 1, 3, and 6 feet, then explain how you found the number of inches.

Give pairs meter sticks and centimeter rulers to measure classroom objects, then record each length in meters and centimeters.
Ask students to explain why converting 5 hours to minutes requires multiplication rather than division.
