CCSS.Math.Content.4.MD.A.2

Math4th GradeSolve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit.

The standard

Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.

What this standard means

Students need to solve word problems about length, time, volume, mass, and money using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They also need to convert larger units to smaller units, like hours to minutes, dollars to cents, or liters to milliliters, including simple fractions and decimals.

Mastery means students choose the right operation, label units, convert when needed, and show the situation with a scaled diagram or number line. Common trouble spots are mixing units in one calculation, forgetting conversion facts, and reading elapsed time problems too quickly.

Ways to teach it

  • Have students measure classroom objects in feet, then convert each measurement to inches and compare totals on a chart.
  • Ask students to write a two-step word problem about buying snacks, using dollars and cents, then trade and solve with a partner.
  • Give a 5-minute exit ticket with one elapsed time problem, one money problem, and one unit conversion problem with labels required.
  • Use a grocery receipt or sports schedule to solve real questions about total cost, time between events, or weight in smaller units.
