What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve word problems about elapsed time, liquid volume, and mass. They measure or estimate using minutes, grams, kilograms, and liters, then choose an operation and include units.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose suitable units, read measurement tools, and estimate whether an answer is reasonable. They solve one-step problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division and label answers correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may subtract clock numbers as if time were base ten, especially when an interval crosses an hour. They may confuse grams with kilograms, or liters with milliliters, and choose unreasonable units or operations.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: “Practice starts at 3:45 and ends at 4:20. How long is practice? Show your method.”

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students weigh classroom objects, measure water in marked containers, and time one-minute tasks.
Ask students to explain two ways to find the elapsed time from 10:35 to 11:10.
Play measurement match using cards with objects, estimates, units, and measured values that students pair and justify.
Plan a class picnic by calculating drink volume, food mass, and the time available for eating and cleanup.
