Math5th GradeMeasurement and Data

The standard

Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to convert measurements within the same system, such as inches to feet, meters to centimeters, or minutes to hours. They should know when to multiply and when to divide, and use conversion facts accurately in multi-step problems.

Mastery looks like choosing the right conversion factor, labeling units, and checking whether the answer makes sense. Students often mix up metric and customary systems, reverse multiplication and division, or drop units. Larger numbers, decimals, and multi-step word problems usually cause the most trouble.

Ways to teach it

  • Give pairs rulers, meter sticks, and tape measures to measure classroom items, then convert each measurement to a larger or smaller unit.
  • Ask students to explain in writing why converting 3 feet to inches uses multiplication, but converting 36 inches to feet uses division.
  • Use a five-question exit ticket with one length, one mass, one capacity, one time conversion, and one word problem.
  • Have students convert recipe amounts, sports distances, or travel times from a real schedule, menu, or game statistic sheet.
