Math6th GradeRatios and Proportional Relationships

The standard

Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to make sense of ratios as comparisons between two quantities, then use those comparisons to solve problems. They should write ratios in different forms, connect ratios to tables, tape diagrams, double number lines, and unit rates, and explain what each number means in context.

Mastery looks like choosing a helpful model, scaling ratios up or down, finding missing values, and using unit rates to compare options. Students often get stuck treating ratios like subtraction, mixing up part-to-part and part-to-whole, or calculating correctly but losing track of the units.

Ways to teach it

  • Use colored cubes to build juice mixes, then have students record each mix as a ratio, table, and double number line.
  • Ask students to write which deal is better, 3 notebooks for $4.50 or 5 notebooks for $7.25, and justify with unit rates.
  • Give a 5-minute exit ticket with one tape diagram, one missing table value, and one unit rate question.
  • Compare two sports drink recipes from labels or a teacher-made handout, then decide which has the stronger flavor per cup.
