What Students Need to Do
- Students divide two related quantities to find an amount for one unit. They use that unit rate to compare choices and calculate missing values.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label a unit rate, such as dollars per pound or miles per hour. They use that rate to find an unknown amount and explain what the answer means.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may divide in the wrong order, such as finding hours per mile when the question asks for miles per hour. They may also multiply or divide only one quantity, breaking the equivalent ratio.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A cyclist travels 42 miles in 3 hours. Find the miles per hour and the distance traveled in 5 hours.”

Give pairs grocery ads and calculators, then have them compare package prices by finding the cost per ounce.
Ask students to write which is faster, 150 miles in 3 hours or 220 miles in 4 hours, and justify their choice.
Play Unit Rate Match with cards showing ratios, unit rates, and matching situations for students to group.
Have students compare two phone data plans by calculating the cost per gigabyte and choosing the better deal.
