What Students Need to Do
- Students treat a fraction bar as a division sign and connect equal sharing to fractional quotients. They solve whole-number division situations whose answers are fractions or mixed numbers, using models and equations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students represent a whole-number division problem with an equation and write the quotient as a fraction or mixed number. They use a drawing or multiplication equation to explain the equal shares and identify the two whole numbers around the answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may divide the denominator by the numerator, or write the divisor on top. They may also give a remainder instead of expressing the leftover amount as a fraction, or misread an improper fraction as less than one.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Seven friends share 23 granola bars equally. How many bars does each friend get? Write an equation, a mixed number, and the two whole numbers your answer lies between.”

Ways to Teach It
Have students cut five paper sandwiches into equal shares for four people, then label each share with a fraction and mixed number.
Ask students to explain in writing why sharing three pizzas among five people gives each person three fifths of a pizza.
Play Share It: draw two whole-number cards, divide the first by the second, and earn a point for a correct fraction model.
Plan equal portions for six hikers sharing 17 liters of water, including each hiker’s amount and the whole numbers surrounding it.
