CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.B.4a
The standard
Understand a fraction a/b as a multiple of 1/b.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to see a fraction as repeated unit fractions. For example, 3/5 means three copies of 1/5. They should connect pictures, words, and equations, such as 3/5 = 3 × 1/5. They are not multiplying fractions yet. They are using multiplication as “groups of” a unit fraction.
Mastery looks like drawing or using a fraction model, naming the unit fraction, counting how many copies are shown, and writing the matching equation. Students often get stuck thinking 3/5 means 3 groups of 5, or they ignore the denominator and count only pieces.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Give fraction strips and have students build 4/6, then label it as four copies of 1/6 and write 4/6 = 4 × 1/6.
- Prompt: Show 5/8 on a number line and ask, “How many jumps of 1/8 did we make, and what equation matches?”
- Quick assessment: Ask students to draw 7/10, circle each 1/10 part, and complete 7/10 = ___ × 1/10.
- Real-world connection: Use an egg carton cut into twelfths and ask students to show 5/12 as five single twelfth spaces.
