The standard
Solve real world problems involving division of unit fractions by non-zero whole numbers and division of whole numbers by unit fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to make sense of two division situations: sharing one unit fraction among several people, and finding how many unit-fraction groups fit in a whole number. They should draw models, write matching equations, and explain what the quotient means in the story.
Mastery looks like choosing the right model without guessing: partitioning a fraction for sharing, or counting unit-fraction groups in wholes. Students often mix up the two cases, flip numbers without meaning, or give an answer that does not match the question, such as people instead of cups.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs fraction strips and ask them to model 1/2 divided by 4, then write the equation and answer in words.
- Ask: How is sharing 1/3 of a pizza among 2 friends different from finding how many 1/3 pizzas fit in 2 pizzas?
- Show two word problems and two tape diagrams, then have students match each problem to a diagram and equation on an exit ticket.
- Use measuring cups to find how many 1/4-cup scoops are in 3 cups of rice, then record the division equation.
