CCSS.Math.Content.5.NF.B.7c
The Standard
Solve real world problems involving division of unit fractions by non-zero whole numbers and division of whole numbers by unit fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a problem asks them to share one unit fraction or count unit-fraction groups within a whole number. They solve using drawings, equations, and context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a matching model and equation for each problem. They find the correct quotient and explain what it means using the units from the story.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat both division situations the same way. They may say 2 divided by 1/3 is 2/3, or change the wrong part of the fraction.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a model and write an equation for, “How many 1/4-cup servings can be made from 3 cups?” Explain the quotient.

Ways to Teach It
Use fraction strips to share 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 equally among two, three, or four paper figures.
Ask students to compare 1/3 divided by 2 and 2 divided by 1/3 using drawings and written explanations.
Play a matching game with story cards, equations, visual models, and quotient cards.
Measure rice into unit-fraction cups to find servings from whole cups, then write an equation for each measurement.
