What Students Need to Do
- Students decide when a situation calls for multiplying fractions or mixed numbers. They represent the situation with a diagram and equation, find the product, and interpret it in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose multiplication from the situation without relying only on key words. They draw an accurate model, calculate correctly, label the answer, and explain why its size makes sense.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may multiply whole-number and fraction parts separately, or add numerators and denominators. They may also assume multiplication always makes a number larger or ignore units in the answer.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A recipe uses 2 1/2 cups of flour per batch. How much flour is needed for 3/4 of a batch?” Require a model, equation, and answer.
