MathGrades 9–12Modeling with Geometry

The standard

Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to see real objects as combinations of geometric shapes. They should choose a reasonable shape, name the measurements needed, and use properties like radius, height, area, volume, or symmetry to describe the object.

Mastery looks like a student saying, “I can model this trash can as a cylinder, measure height and diameter, and estimate volume.” Students often get stuck choosing a shape that is too exact or too simple. They may also measure the wrong parts, mix up radius and diameter, or forget that a model is an estimate, not a perfect copy.

Ways to teach it

  • Give students cans, cones, boxes, and sports balls, then have them label each with a matching geometric model and needed measurements.
  • Ask students to write: What shape would you use to model a backpack, and what would your model leave out?
  • Show a photo of a silo and ask students to list the shape, needed measurements, and formula they would use.
  • Have students estimate how much paint covers a classroom column by modeling it as a cylinder and measuring height and diameter.
