The standard
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics · Geometry
What this standard means
Students need to find area, surface area, and volume for shapes made from triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms. They should break composite figures into simpler parts, choose the right formula, label units, and connect the calculation to a real situation.
Mastery looks like drawing or marking the parts, showing formulas, substituting values correctly, and explaining what the answer means. Students often get stuck using perimeter instead of area, mixing up surface area and volume, forgetting hidden faces on prisms, or leaving answers without square or cubic units.
Ways to teach it
- Have students build a rectangular prism from centimeter cubes, sketch all faces, then calculate its volume and surface area from the model.
- Ask students to write how they would find the paint needed for a doghouse made of rectangles and triangles.
- Give a three-question exit ticket with one composite area problem, one prism volume problem, and one surface area problem.
- Bring in a cereal box and ask students to estimate cardboard needed for the box and cereal it can hold.
