What Students Need to Do
- Students draw and interpret nets made from rectangles and triangles. They find the area of every face and add those areas to get surface area. They use the result to solve practical problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can draw or identify a valid net for a prism or pyramid. They label dimensions, find each rectangle and triangle area, and add all faces once. They report answers in square units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count an edge instead of a face, miss a hidden face, or count one face twice. They may forget to divide by two for triangle area or confuse surface area with volume. Some draw nets whose faces overlap or cannot fold into the intended solid.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw and label a net for a triangular prism with 3, 4, 5 side lengths and length 8. Find its surface area and show each face area.
