What this standard means

Kindergarteners need to name common flat and solid shapes and talk about what they notice. They should use words like side, corner, flat, round, face, roll, and stack. They also need to recognize shapes in different sizes, colors, and positions.

Mastery looks like a child saying, “That is still a triangle because it has three sides,” even when it is turned sideways. Students often get stuck on rectangles versus squares, circles versus spheres, and shapes that are stretched, tilted, or partly hidden. Many rely on color or size instead of shape features.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on: Give pairs shape cards and attribute blocks, then have them match each card to a real block and explain one feature.
  • Prompt: Show a tilted square and ask, “Is this still a square? How do you know?”
  • Quick assessment: Hold up five mixed shape objects and have students name each one and tell one reason.
  • Real-world connection: Take a classroom shape walk and record found shapes on a simple chart with drawings or stickers.
