Math4th GradeGeometry

The standard

Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to recognize and draw points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles. They also need to name right, acute, and obtuse angles, and use these features to describe shapes. They should sort triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons by parallel sides, perpendicular sides, and angle types.

Mastery looks like using geometry words to justify a classification, not just naming a shape by appearance. Students often mix up rays and line segments, think a tilted right angle is not right, or classify shapes by size or direction instead of properties.

Ways to teach it

  • Give students straws and twist ties to build shapes, then label parallel sides, perpendicular sides, and angle types with sticky notes.
  • Ask students to explain, “Can a shape have both parallel sides and a right angle?” using a sketch and two geometry words.
  • Show five drawn shapes and ask students to circle one acute angle, mark parallel sides, and write one property-based shape name.
  • Have students photograph or sketch classroom objects, then label lines, rays, angles, parallel sides, and perpendicular sides they can find.
