CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.A.3
The standard
Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

What this standard means
Students need to read a word problem, decide which operations are needed, and keep track of more than one step. They should write an equation with a letter for the unknown, not just show scattered work. They also need to decide what to do with a remainder, such as round up, drop it, or explain it.
Mastery looks like a clear plan, correct computation, a labeled answer, and a quick estimate that shows the answer makes sense. Students often get stuck by grabbing the first numbers they see, doing steps in the wrong order, or treating every remainder the same way.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs a party-planning supply list with prices and package sizes, then have them calculate total cost and needed packages.
- Ask students to write: How did you know which operation to do first, and what did your remainder mean?
- Use one exit ticket with a two-step word problem, an equation with a blank letter, and a reasonableness check.
- Show a school field trip bus problem where leftover students mean another bus is needed, not a decimal bus.
