What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students apply phonics and word analysis to decode words. They use blends, digraphs, vowel patterns, syllables, roots, suffixes, and high-frequency word knowledge.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student decodes regular one- and two-syllable words, identifies syllable boundaries, and recognizes common sight words. The student uses word parts rather than guessing from pictures.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on the first letter and context alone. They may split syllables without locating vowel sounds or overlook roots and suffixes.
How to Assess It
- Give a short list containing digraphs, blends, long-vowel patterns, a two-syllable word, a suffixed word, and high-frequency words. Ask students to read and explain strategies.
