1RF3 is a cluster heading. These are the individual standards under it.

  Know the letter-sound correspondences for common blends and consonant digraphs (e.g., sh, ch, th).

• 1RF3.b

  Decode long vowel sounds in regularly spelled one-syllable words (e.g., final –e conventions and common vowel teams).

• 1RF3.c

  Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

• 1RF3.d

  Determine the number of syllables in a printed word by using knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel sound.

  Decode two-syllable words following basic patterns by breaking the words into syllables.

What Students Need to Do

Students apply phonics and word analysis to decode words. They use blends, digraphs, vowel patterns, syllables, roots, suffixes, and high-frequency word knowledge.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student decodes regular one- and two-syllable words, identifies syllable boundaries, and recognizes common sight words. The student uses word parts rather than guessing from pictures.

Common Misconceptions

Students may rely on the first letter and context alone. They may split syllables without locating vowel sounds or overlook roots and suffixes.

How to Assess It

Give a short list containing digraphs, blends, long-vowel patterns, a two-syllable word, a suffixed word, and high-frequency words. Ask students to read and explain strategies.

   Build words with tiles for blends, digraphs, vowel patterns, roots, and suffixes, then blend them aloud.

   Ask students which visible word part helped most with an unfamiliar word.

   Play Decode and Sort by phonics pattern, syllable count, or word part.

   Read labels and simple directions around the classroom using phonics before context checking.
