What Students Need to Do

Students decode unfamiliar multisyllabic words using letter-sound correspondences, syllable patterns, roots, and affixes. They apply the same analysis when a word appears alone or within a sentence.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student breaks an unfamiliar word into useful sound and meaning units, then blends it accurately. The student uses context to confirm the reading rather than to replace word analysis.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess a word from context after reading only its beginning. They may overlook a root change, attach an affix to the wrong chunk, or divide syllables without checking pronunciation.

How to Assess It

Give students five unfamiliar multisyllabic words, some alone and some in sentences. Ask them to mark helpful parts, read each word, and explain one correction.

   Construct words from root, prefix, suffix, and syllable cards, then annotate the parts before reading aloud.

   Ask students to compare biography and biographer, explaining which parts help decode each word.
