What Students Need to Do

Students decode unfamiliar grade-level words by looking for meaningful parts, common prefixes and suffixes, and syllable chunks. They also recognize grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words that do not follow the usual sound patterns.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can read an unfamiliar multisyllabic word by separating useful word parts and blending them accurately. The student can explain how a familiar prefix or suffix affects the word and read common irregular words automatically.

Common Misconceptions

Students may guess a whole word from its first letter or skip an unfamiliar chunk. They may treat a prefix or suffix as a separate word, or force a regular sound pattern onto an irregular word.

How to Assess It

Give the student five words: replay, helpful, careless, remember, and enough. Ask the student to mark useful parts, read each word aloud, and explain one affix.

   Build word cards with movable prefix, base-word, and suffix tiles; students combine the parts, read each word, and explain its meaning.

   Ask students to compare hopeful and hopeless, then explain how each suffix changes the base word's meaning.

   Play a word-sort relay using multisyllabic, affixed, and irregular words; teams sort, read, and justify each placement.

   Collect unfamiliar words from a science page, then mark helpful parts and rehearse reading the sentence aloud.
