What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read unfamiliar multisyllabic words by combining letter-sound knowledge, syllable patterns, and meaningful word parts. They apply these strategies both inside sentences and when words appear alone.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can divide an unfamiliar word into useful syllables or morphemes and blend it accurately. The student checks the pronunciation against context without depending on context as the only strategy.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the first syllable or surrounding sentence rather than analyzing the whole word. They may split a word between unhelpful letters or ignore a familiar root or affix.
How to Assess It
- Give students four unfamiliar multisyllabic words alone and in sentences. Ask them to mark syllables or morphemes, read each word, and explain one strategy.

Ways to Teach It
Build multisyllabic words with root, affix, vowel-pattern, and syllable cards, then blend each completed word.
Ask students to compare disagreement and disappointed, explaining which word parts help with pronunciation and meaning.
Play Decode and Confirm, reading a word card first and then checking it in a sentence card.
Collect unfamiliar words from a science article and annotate roots, affixes, syllables, and useful context.
