What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine letter-sound knowledge, syllable patterns, roots, and affixes to decode unfamiliar multisyllabic words. They apply the strategy in and out of context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies useful chunks, reads each syllable, and blends the whole word accurately. The student verifies pronunciation and meaning in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from context before analyzing the word. They may split roots or affixes incorrectly or ignore vowel patterns across syllables.
How to Assess It
- Give four unfamiliar multisyllabic words, two in sentences and two alone. Ask students to mark syllables or morphemes and read each word.
