What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students hear and work with spoken words, syllables, and individual sounds. They count, blend, segment, and manipulate sounds in one-syllable words, including consonant blends.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student blends segmented sounds into a word and segments a spoken word into syllables or phonemes. The student changes a sound to create a new one-syllable word.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name letters instead of producing sounds. They may treat a consonant blend as one sound or add a vowel between blended consonants.

How to Assess It

Say the words stop and map. Ask students to blend and segment stop, then change the first sound in map to make cap.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Push counters into sound boxes while segmenting one-syllable words with and without consonant blends.

  2. Ask students what changes in a word when one sound is replaced.

  3. Play Blend Build by combining spoken phonemes and manipulating one sound each round.

  4. Segment and blend names of familiar classroom objects without showing their spelling.
