What Students Need to Do: Students create new spoken one-syllable words by adding, deleting, or replacing individual sounds. They work orally rather than relying on spelling.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student changes map to cap by replacing the first phoneme and changes stop to top by deleting the first sound. Each response preserves the remaining sounds.
Common Misconceptions: Students may change a letter name instead of a sound. They may alter several phonemes at once or produce a word with more than one syllable.
How to Assess It: Say map, sit, and stop. Ask students to create cap by replacement, it by deletion, and top by deleting the first sound.
