What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students blend individual phonemes into spoken one-syllable words and segment those words into phonemes. They track each sound in order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student blends /s/ /u/ /n/ into sun and segments fish into /f/ /i/ /sh/. The student counts sounds rather than letters.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say letter names, add an extra vowel, or count a digraph as two sounds. They may omit final phonemes.
How to Assess It
- Ask the student to blend /m/ /a/ /p/ and segment shop and nest into individual sounds.
