What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students blend spoken onsets and rimes into one-syllable words and segment words into those parts. They hear the initial consonant sound or blend separately from the remaining chunk.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student blends /m/ and /ap/ into map and separates sun into /s/ and /un/. The onset and rime remain accurate.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split at a random point or confuse onset-rime with syllables. They may omit a consonant in an onset blend.
How to Assess It
- Ask the student to blend /c/ /at/ and /st/ /op/, then segment map and frog into onset and rime.
