What Students Need to Do: Students count, blend, and segment sounds in one-syllable words containing consonant blends. They preserve each consonant sound while combining the word.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student segments stop into four phonemes and blends the phonemes back into the word. The student accurately counts sounds in words such as flag or nest.
Common Misconceptions: Students may count the letters rather than the sounds. They may collapse a blend into one sound or insert an extra vowel between consonants.
How to Assess It: Say flag, stop, and nest. Ask students to count and segment the phonemes in each word, then blend one segmented word.

Lesson moves

Move one counter per sound into boxes for words such as clap, frog, and nest.
Ask students why the beginning of stop contains two separate sounds.
Play Blend and Segment Relay with spoken one-syllable words containing consonant blends.
Listen for blends in names of playground and classroom objects, then count their sounds.
