What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students blend spoken syllables into words and segment spoken words into syllables. They work by listening and speaking without using print.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student combines /rain/ and /bow/ into rainbow and separates rabbit into two spoken parts. The student preserves the word’s sounds.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may segment by individual sounds instead of syllables. They may add, omit, or reorder a spoken part.
How to Assess It
- Say /pic/ /nic/ and ask the student to blend the word. Then say tiger and ask the student to segment its syllables.
