What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create new spoken one-syllable words by changing, adding, or removing phonemes. They manipulate sounds orally without relying on print.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student changes sun to fun by replacing the first sound and stop to top by removing /s/. The remaining sounds stay in order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may change more than one sound or use letter names. They may produce a related word rather than following the sound direction.
How to Assess It
- Say map and ask the student to change /m/ to /c/. Then ask them to remove /s/ from stop and add /s/ to top.
