What Students Need to Do

Students hear and work with spoken words, syllables, onsets, rimes, rhymes, and phonemes. They blend, segment, and manipulate sounds orally.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student produces rhymes, claps syllables, blends onset and rime, and segments one-syllable words into phonemes. The student changes one sound to create a new word.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use letter names instead of spoken sounds. They may confuse syllables with phonemes or produce semantically related words instead of rhymes.

How to Assess It

Ask the student to rhyme with cat, clap syllables in rabbit, blend /m/ and /ap/, segment sun, and change sun to fun.
