What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize spoken words that rhyme and produce their own rhyming words. They focus on matching ending sounds rather than spelling.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student identifies which two words rhyme in a spoken set and supplies another rhyme. The response shares the ending sound even if spelling differs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose words that begin alike or belong to the same category. They may reject a rhyme because the spellings look different.
How to Assess It
- Say cat, sun, hat and ask which words rhyme. Then ask the student to produce a word that rhymes with log.
