What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine letter-sound patterns, syllabication, roots, and affixes to read unfamiliar multisyllabic words. They use the strategy both in context and in isolation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student marks meaningful and pronounceable chunks, decodes each part, and blends the word accurately. The student confirms the result with context and word meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from topic or first syllable. They may split a root or affix incorrectly, overlook vowel patterns, or pronounce each chunk without blending.
How to Assess It
- Give five unfamiliar multisyllabic words from varied subjects, some in sentences. Ask students to segment, decode, and explain the clues used.
