What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students apply beginning phonics and word analysis to decode words. They use common consonant sounds, short vowels, regular one-syllable patterns, and sight-word knowledge.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student produces common consonant sounds, decodes taught short-vowel words, and reads familiar high-frequency words. The student blends print rather than guessing from pictures.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use letter names instead of sounds. They may guess from the first letter, confuse short vowels, or expect every sight word to follow regular patterns.

How to Assess It

Show consonant cards, regular short-vowel words, and common high-frequency words. Ask the student to give sounds and read each item.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build short-vowel words with tiles, practice consonant sounds, and mark tricky parts in sight words.

  2. Ask students which letters provide the sounds used to decode a word.

  3. Play Sound Word Sight Sort with letter and word cards.

  4. Read simple labels and directions using phonics before checking pictures.
