What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read common high-frequency words automatically by sight. They recognize the whole printed word in varied contexts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student reads familiar high-frequency words in mixed lists and simple sentences. Recognition does not depend on a picture or fixed order.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from first letter or sentence pattern. They may confuse visually similar common words.
How to Assess It
- Show ten common high-frequency words in mixed order, then five within sentences. Ask the student to read both sets.
