What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read most common high-frequency words automatically by sight. They recognize the complete word in lists and connected text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student reads common high-frequency words accurately in changing orders and sentences. Recognition does not depend on pictures or memorized sentence position.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the first letter or context. They may confuse similar words such as there, three, and these.
How to Assess It
- Show fifteen common high-frequency words in mixed order, then five within sentences. Ask students to read both sets.
