- Students distinguish long and short vowel sounds when reading regular one-syllable words, including common vowel teams. They connect each sound with its spelling pattern.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student accurately contrasts pairs such as hop and hope or rid and ride. The student reads common vowel-team words and names the vowel sound.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may judge vowel sound from one letter while ignoring final e or a vowel team. They may confuse vowel letter names with sounds.
How to Assess It
- Give mixed one-syllable words with short vowels, final e, and vowel teams. Ask students to read and sort them by long or short sound.
