What Students Need to Do
- Students decode short and long vowel sounds in two-syllable words. They divide the word into manageable syllables and blend the parts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student reads two-syllable words with accurate vowel sounds and combines the syllables smoothly. The student checks the pronunciation against a familiar spoken word or context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may apply one vowel sound across both syllables. They may split the word at an unhelpful point or leave one syllable unblended.
How to Assess It
- Give six regular two-syllable words with mixed long and short vowel patterns. Ask students to mark syllables, read each, and identify vowel sounds.
