- Students read common high-frequency words automatically by sight. They recognize the complete spelling rather than guessing from the first letter.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student reads common high-frequency words accurately in lists and connected text. Recognition remains quick when the words appear in different sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on sentence context to guess. They may confuse visually similar words such as where and were.
How to Assess It
- Show twenty common high-frequency words in mixed order, then embed five in sentences. Ask students to read both sets accurately.
