What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decode some regularly spelled one-syllable words. They connect letters with sounds and blend the sounds in order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student reads taught CVC and other regular patterns without relying on pictures. Each sound is represented and blended into a recognizable word.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the first letter or image. They may omit final sounds or say sounds separately without blending.
How to Assess It
- Give eight unfamiliar regular one-syllable words using taught patterns. Ask the student to sound through and read each.
